Today is Mother’s Day, and I can’t help but feel a bit overwhelmed with gratitude every year on this day. So I am writing a Happy Mother's Day letter to my mom to share my overflow of emotions.

My mom has been that one person in my life who consistently believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself. I know no matter what happens, she’s always got my back.

She makes me laugh when…

… she asks me questions like “How do I fix the cookie on the computer?” or “Do you know what ‘lmao’ means?”

She gives me confidence whenever…

… I doubt myself. Like when I was applying to grad school and started to think I should be more “realistic” in my school choices. She told me to ignore my inner critic, and she didn’t let me get deterred.

She consoles me when…

… I come home crying with a broken heart or things don’t go my way. She reminds me that anyone worth knowing won’t make me cry like that, and sometimes things work out even better than we can envision.

She gives me strength…

… whenever I feel afraid. She taught me to be brave. She showed me how to stand on my own two feet. Now whenever I’m embarking on a long solo trip across the world or some other risky adventure, I know it’s possible because of the courage she instilled in me.

She always reminds me that…

… no matter where I am or what I’m doing, I am loved. I am safe and secure because I have a sense of rootedness that she provides. I know she is always with me even if we’re far away.

Mom,

Thank you for giving me life, for giving me my baby brother, and for giving me an entire lifetime of unconditional love and support. I know I wouldn’t have accomplished anything in my life without you.
